Packet Tracer 4.0 models networking protocols with dynamic PDU updates, not just the one-time recalculation of networking protocols that occurs when you switched into Simulation Mode in Packet Tracer 3.2. By modeling ongoing updates, the “aliveness” of the modeled network supports back-and-forth protocols and debug commands.
In terms of supported protocols, virtually all protocols and commands from Packet Tracer 3.2 are supported, as well as much of ARP, CDP, ICMP, EIGRP, inter-VLAN routing, PPP, and Frame Relay.

Extendable Architecture

At the CCNA level, Packet Tracer 4.0 does NOT support the following important protocols: Telnet, OSPF, VTP, DNS, and ISDN. Limited models of CSMA/CD, TCP, and Packet Tracer’s implementation of STP (Packet Tracer Layer 2 Loop Breaking Protocol) are used. However, the architecture does support the possible future addition of these and other important protocols.

GUI Improvements

Packet Tracer 4.0 retains the logical topology as the primary workspace but adds physical representations of devices, realtime and simulation modes, and a wide variety of views and windows. The GUI supports multiple languages so the application may be locally translated.

Representation and Visualization Tools

An Event list is included in Packet Tracer 4.0 in the form of a global sniffer. This allows the display of the majority of simulated PDUs as events. For detailed protocol analysis, these events may be played in a continuous animation mode, forward, backward or in a stepped through process. This is a significant enhancement over the Packet Tracer 3.2 Simulation Mode. A more powerful OSI Layer view and PDU view, and more sophisticated custom PDUs, are also supported.

Annotation and Authoring Capabilities

Packet Tracer 4.0 retains the Packet Tracer 3.2 Activity Wizard. It also includes templates for four different types of problem-solving activities: concept builders (network modeling problems), skill builders (pre-lab and post-lab implementation and practice activities), design problems, and troubleshooting problems.
